What is Depression
How do you know if you’re suffering from depression, or just experiencing the normal ups and downs that are sometimes a part of life? Depression is much more than just an occasional feeling. Feelings of depression or sadness can become our constant companions; staying for weeks, months and even years if left untreated. And if left untreated these feelings of helplessness and hopelessness may grow to the point where we can no longer function on a day-to-day basis.
Symptoms of depression may include:
- Significant change in appetite resulting in either marked weight loss or gain
- Recurring disturbances in sleep patterns
- Increased agitation or inability to relax for an extended period of time
- Fatigue, lethargy, or loss of energy for an extended period of time
- Sadness, despondency, despair, loneliness or feelings of worthlessness
- Inability to concentrate, focus, or make decisions
- Recurring thoughts of death or suicide
- Plans for a suicide or an attempt at suicide
If you’re experiencing any of the signs of depression, A Place of Hope can administer a depression test as part of your comprehensive assessment in order to determine the level of treatment you require. Some patients may require depression medication, others may not, but all patients will receive treatment that addresses the emotional, intellectual, relational, physical, nutritional and spiritual issues at play.
It is important to note that there is no single cause for depression, which is why our whole-person approach to depression help and mental health counseling is so important. We address the mind, body and spirit of each and every patient that visits A Place of Hope’s depression clinic so that we can get to the heart of their underlying issues and find solutions.
